Fear of Fighting

Not my words. These are the profound words of Kevin Kelso. I posted some of his words before in this journal.

If you have never found something so dear and so precious to you that you will die for it, then you aren't fit to live. You may be thirty-eight years old, as I happen to be, and one day some great principle, some great opportunity stands before you and calls upon you to stand up for some great issue, some great cause. And you refused to do it because you want to live longer. You're afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you're afraid that somebody will stab you or shoot at you or bomb your house.

So you refuse to take the stand. Well, you may go on and live until you are ninety, but you are just as dead at thirty-eight as you would be at ninety. And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announced of an earlier death of the spirit. You died when you refused to stand up for right.

You died when you refused to stand up for truth.

You died when you refused to stand up for justice. Don't ever think that you're by yourself. Go on to jail if necessary, but you never go alone.

So you have two centers. One center you come with, which is given by existence itself. That is the self. And the other center, which is created by the society, is the ego. It is a false thing - and it is a very great trick. Through the ego the society is controlling you. You have to behave in a certain way, because only then does the society appreciate you. You have to walk in a certain way; you have to laugh in a certain way; you have to follow certain manners, a morality, a code. Only then will the society appreciate you, and if it doesn't, you ego will be shaken. And when the ego is shaken, you don't know where you are, who you are.

The others have given you the idea.

That idea is the ego.

Try to understand it as deeply as possible, because this has to be thrown. And unless you throw it you will never be able to attain to the self. Because you are addicted to the center, you cannot move, and you cannot look at the self.

I think they are really strong words and was unsure about posting it. So I thought on it over night and decided I would. I hope it doesn't offend anyone...

Thanks for reading Vern.

I can't imagine how it could offend any one... It's just a truism and a slightly more eloquent way to say "if you've never had anyone or anything you'd be willing to die for you've never been alive"... Or, "if you haven't stared death in the face you don't know what being alive really is"...

And many people will say they have had that some one/thing in their lives, but most would not act on it if the situation required it... Apathy is the antithesis of liberty and all too many are quite willing to trade liberty and freedom for whatever token of "security" they hold near and dear... :(
